Funkerman

A DJ has the ability to RULE THE NIGHT. They can get the WHEELS IN MOTION with a single DELICIOUS track. Imagine your night, partying hard at a dance party as you start to recognize the HITZ OF THE GLITZ it will feel like your senses are starting to SPEED UP till you are FALLIN IN LOVE and knowing that WE LIVE FOR THIS. CADILLACS & BASEBALL BATS, CUBAN CIGARS & BASS GUITARS will all start to gain more relevance. You may think I am starting to talk like THE SUPER NATURAL but give me 3 MINUTES TO EXPLAIN.The reason for MY FIRE is our next guest.Welcome to The Hump Day Crew, THE ONE, GOOD GOD, Funkerman!

Many love affairs start off in the bedroom, whether it’s Madonna, Britney, Justin or KISS adorning our walls, those early years in the dark depths of our teenage privacy can be some of the most important and formative. That was certainly the case for Dutchman Ardie van Beek, or Funkerman as he’s now known around the world. But it wasn’t plastic pop bunnies that enamored a young Ardie – instead it was the sounds of Public Enemy, Eric B and Rakim and other heroes of the US hip-hop explosion that inspired him to take on the turntables and begin what was to be a journey into the very soul of funk. Religiously crate-digging through the annals of r’n’b and soul, he followed the samples back to the original disco and rare groove tracks, unearthing a whole history of dance music in the process. For the 13-year-old Funkerman it was as if someone had opened a musical treasure chest for him to play with.

Ironically, the free and easy days of early hip-hop disappeared, with Funkerman feeling creatively hemmed in by the rules and regulations that seemed to spring up around the sound. So it was that, in the early 90s, while spinning at Spock in Breda, the beats of Todd Terry, Derrick May, and Lil Louis that gradually worked their magic on the Dutchman. It was house music, and Funkerman was hooked.

Hooked swiftly turned to obsessed, as is the case in all true music success stories. Hobby became profession, a job in a record store introducing him to a wealth of new tracks and some of the people he would later collaborate and indeed go into business with. Hours spent not just listening to music but to other house fans raving on about tunes, he quickly began to understand the dimensions of what made one house anthem work and another disappear into the bargain section. Production was well and truly calling Funkerman.

With the job at the record store progressing through to A&R, he finally began to pull all the threads of those formative years together. Learning the ins and outs of the business, he teamed up with friend Raf and fellow Dutch DJ/producer Fedde le Grand to create Flamingo Recordings, a house and electronic-tech label that is currently one of the hottest imprints in the world.

Over the past 4 years Funkerman and Flamingo Recordings have been behind such hits as Put Your Hands Up For Detroit, The Creeps, Speed Up and the massive current smash summer anthem, 3 Minutes To Explain. Not only that but as far as DJ diaries go, Funkerman’s is fit to bursting point. In demand the world over with sometimes a staggering four shows a night, this is a DJ who in demand – and then some! In 2008 alone he has already clocked up appearances at Mystery Land, Love Parade, Creamfields, Extrema Outdoor, Ministry of Sound London and what surely has to be seen as the biggest feather in his cap - a residency at world-famous Ibiza super-club, Space. With his own Flamingo Nights series of parties becoming an international benchmark for high-class production and world caliber guest mixes, a label so on form it’s mind blowing, and a fast-growing reputation as the man to front up any dance floor, Funkerman’s career is set to hit warp factor, reserved for only true dance A-listers.

Fedde Le Grand at Sensation

The power a DJ can have over a crowd can be overwhelming. Listening to a set from our next guest can lead you to GET THIS FEELING like you have been in LAS VEGAS and you are JUST TRIPPIN after one too many cocktails. But once he gets the WHEELS IN MOTION you will start to feel THE VIBE.
You may even get the urge to do crazy things, perhaps you will want to PUT YOUR HANDS UP FOR DETROIT and behave like THE CREEPS who ring you at 3am in the morning saying, “I MISS YOU”.
Best I hurry along because although Madonna and JT will give you 4 Minutes to Save the World, this man will only give you 3 MINUTES TO EXPLAIN because he TAKE NO SHHHHHH.
Who is our next guest?…. LET ME THINK ABOUT IT…Fedde le Grand, welcome to the Hump Day Crew.

Rare breeds like Fedde Le Grand are few and far between, and so when someone like this comes along it’s right that the world sits up and listens. He’s a Dutchman blessed with such talent that keeping up to speed with what he does is a task in itself It could be said Fedde came out of nowhere, riding off the success of a hit record. Well, to set the record straight; this couldn’t be further from the truth. Le Grand has spent the majority of his earlier youth grafting, spinning records in his Native country and cutting tracks until the inevitable happened. Put your hands up for Detroit was produced in the bedroom, released by one of the biggest labels in dance, and it enabled Fedde to step out into the world of Electronic Dance.

His abilities in the studio are endless. Together with his good friend and production partner Funkerman, they’ve churned out some immaculate material that has slotted into an absolute cross section of fellow DJS. The Flamingo Recordings imprint now stands as one of the most forward-thinking and exciting labels in EDM, with top flight acts eagerly hanging on for news of new releases and remix work.

Fedde’s production talents have been called upon by the great and the good over the past few years. 2008 sees him work with two major music acts, Grammy Award-winning Black Eyed Peas front man Will.i.am, and Madonna – the name says it all. Famed for picking up the hottest talent, Madonna mixed Put your hands up for Detroit with Music for her recent promotional tour, to rapturous response, but the queen of pop didn’t stop there. Next came an invitation for Fedde to remix Give it 2 Me, the second single from the album Hard Candy. Fedde now joins a select group of producers to work with the Queen of Pop, including Mirwais, William Orbit and Stuart Price aka Jacques Lu Cont. The ultimate seal of approval if ever one were needed and straight from the queen of pop!

Add to all the above Fedde’s rammed DJ diary, including his residency at world-famous Pacha Ibiza, countless festivals and headline gigs around the world, and it’s clear that this is man who has conquered his game, plans to stay there for a long time to come. With his debut artist album Output released in the second half of 2008, he is set to storm the international music charts and cement his position as a household name. His passion for music is evident; the quality of his sound is undisputed. Fedde Le Grand might just be looking for a name change; perhaps Fedde Le Tres Grand is on the horizon?

Fedde will be in Melbourne for NYE 2008 playing at Sensation. Check out the below video to see Feed at a past Sensation Dance Party.

NICA Teaches The Hump Day Crew A Few Circus Tricks

Did you know that the methology behind being a circus performer is to learn about injuries? Why? Because when you eventually are bruised or have serious rope burn, you can explain exactly how you got it....and in future, perhaps avoid it from happening again. These were the first encouraging words Adz and Ginni heard when they set out to NICA.

Tom and Shaun, graduating students from NICA, taught them the aerial hoop, the trapeze and a few tricks involving juggling and coordination.

Click on the videos below.

Free Hugs from The Hump Day Crew

Sometimes, a hug is all we need.

Free hugs is a real life controversial story of Juan Mann, a man with a sole mission of reaching out and hugging a stranger to brighten up their lives.

In this age of social disconnectivity and lack of human contact, the effects of the Free Hugs campaign became phenomenal.

As this symbol of human hope spread across the city, police and officials ordered the Free Hugs campaign BANNED. What we then witness is the true spirit of humanity come together in what can only be described as awe inspiring.

For more information, please visit http://www.freehugscampaign.org/

The Hump Day Crew, in an attempt to spread the love around Melbourne, sent out their guests - the contests for the Heaven's Door Calendar Competition, out onto the streets of the CDB to hug as many people as they could.

It gave us great pleasure to speak with one of the great female voices of Australia. This young lady has THE POWER to make ABSOLUTELY EVERYBODY SHINE and did so with her first album…became the first Australian female to reach #1 on the National ARIA chart with her debut album.

Now proving that she is PERFECT and that HEROS LIVE FOREVER she is back with a new album and I definitely recommend you HAVE A LOOK as it may just inspire you to do THE SIMPLE THINGS like come over to MY HOUSE and show A LITTLE LOVE and KISS YOUR MAMA

I best stop my rambling and just START IT...

Today Vanessa Amorosi had a chat to the Hump Day Crew. We asked her about the ARIAs, the army and checked to see how well she knew her back catalogue.
